Vacuum Types to Consider

Upright Vacuums
A great choice for homes with larger carpeted areas. Uprights provide efficient floor coverage but can be heavier and less convenient for stairs and above-floor cleaning.

Canister Vacuums
Versatile and easy to maneuver, canister vacuums work well on a variety of surfaces and make it easier to clean stairs, furniture and hard-to-reach areas.

Stick & Cordless Vacuums
Lightweight and convenient, stick vacuums are ideal for quick everyday cleaning, smaller homes and apartments. Many newer models also offer excellent performance for pet hair and mixed flooring.

Handheld Vacuums
Compact and easy to grab for small messes, vehicles, furniture and areas that are difficult to reach with a full-size vacuum.

Robotic Vacuums
Robotic vacuums are useful for maintaining floors between regular cleanings, particularly in homes with pets. For deeper cleaning, they are generally best used alongside a traditional vacuum.

TYPE OF VACUUM

Make sure you consider what types of surfaces you’ll be cleaning. Your choice of the type of vacuum cleaner will depend on it.

PRICE

How much would you like to spend on a vacuum? Less expensive units won’t provide the longevity of the higher end units. How many vacuums would you like to own in the next 10 years?

COMFORT

Make sure you test drive the vacuum to see how well it handles, and how heavy it is. Is the handle comfortable?

FILTRATATION

If you suffer from allergies, consider a unit with HEPA (High Efficiency Particular Air) or S-Class (The European equivalent of HEPA) filtration.

NOISE

Some people place a great deal of importance on noise considerations. To respond to this, some models have insulated materials around the motors.

Also consider:

  • Motor Power: (amps) Measures the amount of current used by the motor. Higher amps doesn"t mean more cleaning power. Airflow is a truer test of effectiveness.

  • Air Flow: usually measured in cfm (cubic feet per minute). More is better.

  • Filtration System: The level of filtration varies from none (use a bag to collect dust) to sophisticated (filter out pollen and particles less than 100? microns). Units with better filtration systems generally cost more, but can be effective in reducing allergen in the home. HEPA and S-Class vacuums capture 99.97% of all particles and are recommended for those with allergies.

  • Cost Of Ownership: Cost of bags and filters should be considered, as well as routine maintenance.

  • Construction: Usually plastic these days. NOTE: There are many grades of plastics. Some units are made of the same materials as motorcycle helmets, while cheaper units tend to have plastic that is more brittle and prone to breakage.

  • Cord length: Make sure that the cord is long enough for you to effectively clean one area of you home without having to change outlets. Cords can be up to 40 feet on some models.

  • Brush Agitator (roller brush): The roller with bristles under the machine that spins when the machine is on. It increases the cleaning effectiveness on carpets and is a must for removing pet hair.

  • Other Tools and Accessories: Detachable hoses, extensions, hand turbo brushes, corner cleaners.
    Headlights Some models have lights at the front of the base. Unless you live in a particularly dark home, or like vacuuming with the lights off, this feature is more of a novelty than a necessity.

  • Warranty: Can be anywhere from 1 to 10 years.
